The business model

In order to develop software, who all we need?.

We need programmers, testers, architects, functional experts and a customer who can spell out the requirements and pay for the work completed. This is the fundamental thought process behind all agile methodologies. These days organizations are busy reducing cost by issuing pink slips to the bottom layaer of the organization. What about an organization without the top and the middle layers, which can churn out quality software at rock bottom prices with the required quality. Workootam is all about that. An organization without brick and mortar and without the top layer and at the same time accountable to the customer.

The backbone of workootam is a set of hand picked programmers, testers and architects, who will follow a common methodology for project execution (SCRUM methodology - the team will use collabteam tool for project execution).

Customers can post their requirements and the team will estimate and submit a proposal. Once the proposal is agreed by the customer, the team and the customer will get into the project planning exercise (product backlog, sprint planning). Based on the agreed upon sprints, the team delivers.

Teams may work from their own premises or from the customer's site.

There are lot of freelancer sites and at the same time, there is none which provides a project management methodology and commitment on deliveries. This is the USP for workootam.

Team member selection is based on referrals and interviews.

How workootam is different from open source?

Strictly speaking, open source is one type of licence for software. Since the product is built by a set of volunteers (developers), some times people mistake 'open source' to distributed development. Since it is done by volunteers at their own convenience and pace, meeting deadlines and assured post delivery support is a a major issue. Contrary to the open source kind of development teams, workootam is a set of  hand picked developers (referrals plus interview process), who are contractually bound to deliver stuff on time with the required quality. Workootam as a corporate entity is contractually bound to the customer and at the same time gets rid of the expensive top layer of the organization. When most of the organizations are trying to cut costs by reducing the lowest layer, workootam is all about reducing cost by working from locations of the contributors convenience or from low cost work centers and with a flat structure.

About workootam

Workootam - is an experimental concept to develop software in distributed environment without a formal corporate structure and at the same time without diluting time lines, quality and accountability of work. Once formed, workootam will comprise of a network of coders, designers, domain specialists, technical mentors, project managers and customers working on committed project deadlines. The whole concept will be implemented through CollabTeam as the project management platform, which is based on scrum methodology.
